Naltrexone (Vivitrol) Treatment – Orange County, CA.

injecting medicineWhat is Naltrexone ?
Naltrexone therapy is safe and FDA approved breakthrough prescription medicine that is successfully used to treat addictions to alcohol and opioids, such as Heroin, Oxycontin, Fentanyl, Morphine, etc. Naltrexone (Vivitrol) has been widely used since the 1970’s in treating drug and alcohol addiction, and the subcutaneous pellets have been used with over 4,000 patients worldwide with great success and no major side effects. Naltrexone is the generic version of the brand named drugs called Vivitrol and Revia. The TruVida Recovery consulting Medical Group provides high quality and experienced Naltrexone (Revia) implant treatment with over 80% success rate compared to non-use of such receptor antagonist therapies. Naltrexone is not addictive, unlike other anti-craving medications, such as methadone and buprenorphine.

How does Naltrexone (Vivitrol) work ?

Long-term sobriety from opioids and alcohol addiction is difficult for many because the powerful cravings seem to be hardwired into the nervous system. Many addicts go through repeated cycles of sobriety, and then relapse back to using again. Naltrexone is a breakthrough medication that has been scientifically proven to break this vicious cycle of withdrawal and relapse.

Naltrexone is an opioid receptor antagonist, which means it blocks receptors in the brain that trigger dopamine release. Dopamine release is part of the complex pleasure-reward mechanisms that motivate us and lead us to repetitive behavior. When these receptors are blocked by Naltrexone, craving and dependence-related conduct is eliminated, or at least highly reduced, so that new, healthier behaviors are allowed to develop with time.

It binds very strongly to these receptors thereby blocking receptors completely to Opiates. When these brain receptors are blocked, the craving for opioids and alcohol is eliminated or significantly reduced. Simply put, if you take opioid medications or use street drugs (e.g., heroin) while using Naltrexone (Revia), the euphoric effects of the drug will be minimized or blocked. And if alcohol is consumed, the pleasure is very limited and the uncontrollable cascade of relapse is much less likely

How is Naltrexone Administered ?
Naltrexone Therapy can only start after a client has visited with the consulting Medical Physician, and after the Client has completed the detoxification process at a Truvida Recovery Detox facility. Naltrexone can be delivered via three different methods – pills – injection – or subcutaneous pellets.

  1. Naltrexone Pills: Naltrexone pills must be taken on a daily basis, for a period of several months, without a single day missed in order to avoid relapse. The advantage of the pill form, is its ease of use, but the major disadvantage is that if the Client chooses, or forgets to take the daily pill, then relapse happens in many cases.
  2. Naltrexone Injections: The shot releases medication over a 1 month period, is instead of the daily oral “pill form” of Naltrexone.
  3. Naltrexone Subcutaneous Pellets: The small ‘pill-sized pellet’ is placed just under the skin in the lower abdomen while the patient is under local anesthesia during a simple outpatient procedure. The Naltrexone pellet releases the opiate blocking medication over a 2 to 6 month period. During this time, the Naltrexone implant completely dissolves and disappears. The benefits of a Naltrexone implant include less frequent dosage and reduced rates of withdrawal and relapse between doses, as compared to the pill or injection methods.
