Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) are counseling therapies designed to helps Clients suffering with substance addictions, to resolve their indifference towards engaging in treatment and stopping their drug use. Motivational Enhancement therapy is based on the premise that a client is responsible and capable of changing. This therapy attempts to arouse a rapid and internally motivated change, rather than guide the client through the addiction recovery process.
This therapy consists of about 3 to 5 sessions, with the first session being an assessment of the clients situation and state of mind. In the first treatment session, the therapist provides feedback to the initial assessment, stimulating discussion about personal substance use and eliciting self-motivational statements. Motivational interviewing principles are used to strengthen motivation and build a plan for change. Some of the approaches used during MET are empathy expression, supporting self efficacy , avoiding argumentation, and rolling with change.
Coping strategies for high-risk situations are suggested and discussed with the client. In subsequent sessions, the therapist monitors change, reviews cessation strategies being used, and continues to encourage commitment to change or sustained abstinence. clients sometimes are encouraged to bring a significant other to sessions. MET and MI are evidenced based therapies that have shown to be effective in the goal of achieving long term sobriety.
