Grief and Loss Therapy
TruVida Recovery – Orange County, CA.
Grief therapy refers to psycho-therapeutic interventions involving both death-related and non-death related grief. It is not uncommon that some people turn to drugs and alcohol to mask the pain they feel from grief and loss. TruVida Recovery understands that no two people grieve in the same fashion. The experience of loss and grief is highly individual and intensely personal, reflecting a unique interaction of person, loss event, and the multiple contexts in which that loss and grief occur.
Normal Grief and Loss
As part of TruVida’s treatment strategy, we educate the client about grief: what is normal and what is not? Our clinical team then helps the client identify the severity of his or her grief by identifying whether or not the client’s grief and loss is associated with the normal emotions following a loss (i.e. disbelief or shock; sadness; anger; guilt; and/or fear) or determines that he or she suffers from complicated bereavement.
While normal grief and loss symptoms gradually fade over time, symptoms of those who suffer from complicated bereavement linger and on many occasions, become worse. In other words, the client will feel as if he or she is in an ongoing, heightened state of mourning that keeps one from healing. It is in these instances that many are prone to begin or increase drug and/or alcohol use to mask the intense pain they are feeling.
Some of the identifiable symptoms of complicated bereavement are unshakable denial; self-destructive behavior (such as substance abuse); extreme anxiety;and difficulty functioning in daily life.
TruVida’s expert therapists promote a healthy healing process by helping the client work through tough, and at times, unbearable emotions. We pride ourselves on providing a safe and caring environment that allows the client to explore the emotions surrounding his or her loss while at the same time, teach healthy coping skills. The end goal is to help the client prevent negative thoughts and beliefs from gaining such a strong hold that they are difficult to overcome.
