Relapse Prevention Counseling and Education
TruVida recognizes that one of the most important aspects of treatment is relapse prevention counseling and education. Relapse prevention therapy is a type of cognitive-behavior therapy that allows the client to identify internal and external triggers that lead to triggers and/or cravings. This type of therapy is primarily focused on addiction and substance abuse however can also be used to treat mental health disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression and more. Relapse prevention therapy helps clients identify high-risk situations wherein in the client is vulnerable to relapse by both behavioral and cognitive strategies to aid in preventing relapse. Clients, as a part of the treatment process, are required to complete a written relapse prevention plan that they can refer to once they leave treatment.
TruVida’s licensed therapists focuses on the client’s negative emotional state as those particularly in this state are more likely to relapse. Our licensed therapists help clients identify the emotions related to potential relapse: feeling lonely, stressed and/or depressed. Without doing so, clients are more apt to return to old behaviors where in they turn to familiar drugs and/or alcohol used in the past to numb the pain they do not want to feel. By participating in relapse prevention therapy, clients learn how to identify these emotional states while at the same time, learn how to manage them quickly.
Of equal importance is for our clinical team to help clients take a look at their environment and the triggers that may provoke relapse. For example, it is not healthy for the client to witness the so-called ‘friends’ using drugs, seeing a syringe or even an advertisement for alcohol. Even passing by a familiar location can be a reminder of former drug use and subsequently, a trigger for the former addict. TruVida stresses the importance of building a sober support network both in and outside of treatment so that they have the support needed to remain clean and sober. We encourage clients to sever relationships with their ‘using friends’ in order to give them the best chance for success and decrease the chance for relapse. TruVida encourages clients to participate in 12-step programming both while in treatment and on discharge. We stress the importance of securing a sponsor, a home group and new friends in sobriety. Our certified addiction counselors even go so far as to encourage clients to delete potentially harmful contacts from their phones and social media while at the same time, encourage clients to avoid places that are associated with the former drug and alcohol use. TruVida helps the client become armed with coping strategies to address these potentially high-risk situations to promote success.
Administration of Relapse Counseling
TruVida begins relapse prevention counseling at the residential treatment (RTC) level of care and continues throughout the client’s outpatient programs to include partial hospitalization program (PHP), intensive outpatient program (IOP) and outpatient program (OP).) . This mode of counseling can be used both on an individual basis with licensed therapists and certified addiction counselors as well as in a group setting. Clients have the ability to be more vulnerable about past trauma that may have led to their addiction during individual sessions with a licensed therapist. The group setting encourages and allows for an exchange of ideas with the client’s peers and facilitator. Additionally, it affords an opportunity to gain confidence through active listening of other client’s journeys. The goal is for clients to learn how to consider triggers in their own personal lives as well. TruVida recognizes that both are equally important aspect for relapse prevention therapy.
TruVida recognizes that relapse is very common after recovery and we do everything possible to help the client avoid this through relapse prevention therapy. . As such, it is necessary to help clients to consider how to cope ahead with high-risk emotions and situations prior to leaving treatment. Limiting the extent of relapse helps patients sustain long-term change in their recovery from addiction.
